The History and Benefits of Physical Therapy

Movement therapy and physical medicine have stood the test of time. Treatments related to Physical therapy date as far back as 3000 BCE, which were reported by the Tao-Tse people of ancient China through “Cong Fu” therapeutic movement. And the Tao-Tse people weren’t the only civilization to reap the benefits of therapeutic physical medicine, as it is also thoroughly documented by ancient Roman, Greek, and Egyptian civilizations, when physicians themselves administered movement-based interventions to rehabilitate the wounded.

Fast forward a few years (or more like 5,000!) and the physical medicines or exercise sciences began to create their niche in the late 1800s, when Sweden’s very own National Board of Health and Welfare recognized “physiotherapy,” as a credible healthcare practice. Other nearby European countries would soon too, implement the newest trend of healthcare to effectively treat and manage the ill or injured.

It wasn’t until 1918 that physical therapy found its way to America, serving as a viable response to the overwhelming numbers of wounded and ill that faced the country during World War I and the polio epidemic. And it was all thanks to Mary McMillan. Mary McMillan (who is largely viewed as the first lady of physical therapy), along with other unstoppable women, worked as “reconstruction aides,” fearlessly rehabilitating soldiers and cementing a place for physical therapy in American healthcare.

Mary McMillan’s Women’s Physical Therapeutic Association founded in 1921 has since been renamed, American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) to better reflect the growth and diversity of the industry. Along with APTA, physical therapy has been tested and proven to be universally beneficial as the World Physiotherapy (WPT) organization is the global body of over 120 physiotherapy member organizations, representing over 625,000 physiotherapists worldwide!
